The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character and Achievement by David Brooks
In The Social Animal, Brooks says, “...Since 1983 we’ve reformed the education system again and again, yet more than a quarter of high-school students drop out... We’ve tried to close the gap between white and black achievement... to reduce widening inequality... to boost economic mobility... to stem the tide of children raised in single-parent homes. ...And the results of these efforts are mostly disappointing.” Brooks’ premise is that, “These failures have been marked by a single feature: Reliance on an overly simplistic view of human nature.” Brooks’ plan is to, “illustrate how unconscious abilities really work and how, under the right circumstances, they lead to human flourishing...”
We will use Brooks’ point-of-view as a launching point for a consideration of what works – and what doesn’t – in our own efforts to help women and families in our community.
