SEPTEMBER SELECTION

The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character and Achievement by David Brooks (Recommended by Helaine Betnun)

In The Social Animal, Brooks makes the recent revolution in neuroscience understandable, and he applies it to those things we have the most trouble knowing how to teach: What is the best way to build true relationships? How do we instill imaginative thinking? How do we develop our moral intuitions and wisdom and character? Brooks has always been a keen observer of the way we live. Now he takes us one layer down, to why we live that way. (Excerpted from Amazon.com review)

In the Introduction, Brooks says, “...Since 1983 we’ve reformed the education system again and again, yet more than a quarter of high-school students drop out, even though all rational incentives tell them not to.  We’ve tried to close the gap between white and black achievement, but have failed.  ...We’ve tried feebly to reduce widening inequality.  We’ve tried to boost economic mobility.  We’ve tried to stem the tide of children raised in single-parent homes. ...And the results of these efforts are mostly disappointing.”  Brooks’ premise is that, “These failures have been marked by a single feature:  Reliance on an overly simplistic view of human nature.”  Brooks’ plan is to, “illustrate how unconscious abilities really work and how, under the right circumstances, they lead to human flourishing...”

Please join us for our first book group after the summer recess!  We will use Brooks’ point-of-view as a launching point for a consideration of what works – and what doesn’t – in our own efforts to help women and families in our community.

Register Here.  You will receive a confirmation email and reminder email three days prior to the meeting.  Both emails include driving directions to the home of our hostess.
